HEY! Today’s question for “Behind the Counter” is:
What’s your favorite comic book movie??
Clearly they’re dominating theaters right now with no end in sight, you have to have a favorite! Is it the most recent Fantastic Four movie??
Mike: 100% obviously! I prefer the one where Mr. Fantastic’s arm is just a hand on a stick. Nostalgia factor, I kinda wanna say the first Blade movie, but I haven’t watched it in so long that I don’t know if it holds up to what 16 year old me thought about it. There’s a good chance it doesn’t. Out of the new crop, the first Iron Man movie is pretty much as close to as perfect movie as you can get, even down to hiring like a real life Tony Stark to play Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jr looks like he was genetically engineered to play Tony Stark.
John: I’m going to cheat slightly here in two ways. One, I’m going to list two movies and second, they aren’t adaptations which I’m assuming you are looking for. The problem for me is that movies or even television shows can’t match what I’ve seen on the printed page or in my mind.
The first is Unbreakable. I feel the movie understands comics on a level even Marvel and DC sometimes forget. It is an origin story that explains the way to create a strong foundation for a superhero and his/her rogues gallery.
The second is a film that every comic book fan must watch–Comic Book Villains. Look it up, you won’t regret it. I need to go back and watch it myself.
