One of our favorite things to do at the shop is sharing our weekly pull lists and must reads with one another. It’s one of the best ways we’ve been finding new things to read or even reasons to return to old favorites. We thought it would be fun to start sharing our weekly picks of books we’re most excited about. Our hope is that in sharing our excitement you might discover something new to add to your list. Check back weekly on Tuesday evenings for lists from John, Chandler and Jason & Jake. Each has a different background and perspective to share.

Spoiler alert: Also check back in the weeks to come for a chance to win some cool prizes including some of the books we’ll feature on our lists.

2. Gloomhaven Fallen Lion

My favorite books to read in my teen years were the old TSR novels. I’m hoping this is in the same vein.. This comic series is based on the adventure/role-playing board game Gloomhaven.

3. The Era of Great Wonders #1

The Era of Great Wonders: three middle schoolers navigate a world wherein giant monsters have arrived. This sounds like Stranger Things to me, so I’m in

1. Gideon Falls #27

This one is bittersweet for me. It is the highly anticipated finale to one of my favorite comics ever. Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino have done an amazing job creating the universe of Gideon Falls. I plan on returning time and time again. (Seriously go buy all of the trades to Gideon Falls I cannot begin to tell you how good this series is!)

2. Detective Comics #1033

Another bittersweet pick since this will be the last issue written by Peter Tomasi who has put together a more impressive Batman run than anyone who has recently been on either title (fight me James Tynion). Do yourself a favor and get some of these trades by Tomasi. Must read for a Batman fan.

3. Department of Truth #4

Despite what I just said on my last pick I do clearly like Tynion’s writing since this has been on my picks list every week that it has been out. I’m very excited for this book and the potential it holds. Every time I think I know where the story is going he takes it in another direction. A really cool book that feels very much like it belongs to 2020.

1. King in Black #2

We knew this was going to be a big event and so far it hasn’t let us down! Jake read this in the care before we even got home this week. Things have been bad for EddieVenom and all Earths heroes since Knull showed up can’t wait to see how this twists and turns and where we end up. Did we mention it has symbiote dragons?

2. Villainous #3

One of our favorite monthly reads continues to entertain. A young protagonist stuck in between the group of “heroes” who appear anything bud and the Shadow order who may actually be the good guys. Jake and I love the story and art on this one. It’s a nice balance to some of the other there stuff we’re reading.

3. Maestro #5

Jake and I didn’t really know much about Maestro before picking up #1 on a whim because we liked the cover art. The opening was wild and it hooked us from the first one issue. This wraps up this mini series but word is we’re getting more in January. Looking forward to that too.
