One of our favorite things to do at the shop is sharing our weekly pull lists and must reads with one another. It’s one of the best ways we’ve been finding new things to read or even reasons to return to old favorites. We thought it would be fun to start sharing our weekly picks of books we’re most excited about. Our hope is that in sharing our excitement you might discover something new to add to your list. Check back weekly on Tuesday evenings for lists from John, Chandler and Jason & Jake. Each has a different background and perspective to share.

Spoiler alert: Also check back in the weeks to come for a chance to win some cool prizes including some of the books we’ll feature on our lists.

1. Fear Case #1

I’m very excited about this book but with the caveat that I’m already disappointed that it’s only 4 issues long. A mysterious box has appeared at various sites of great tragedy throughout the history of man. If you come into possession of this box, you have three days to rid yourself of it or you face great harm and disaster. A cult has built up around this box’s existence causing the secret agent tasked with investigating it great turmoil. Everything about the synopsis sounds like it’s made for a television show or a movie. I’m very excited about this one.

2. Specter Inspectors #1

One of my favorite cartoons of all-time is still Scooby Doo. This book is about a group of friends and family who explore the same sort of mysteries as the Scooby gang but in a more modern and grown up fashion as the group documents their exploits on social media. The town they explore carries more secrets than they thought they’d ever find. Count me in.

1. Fear Case #1

A no-nonsense Secret Service agent and his new-age partner investigate a mysterious box known as the “Fear Case,” which has appeared throughout history at sites of disaster and tragedy. Whoever comes into possession of this case must pass it on within three days or face deadly consequences. The agents must track down this Fear Case while staying one step ahead of a psychotic cult and the otherwordly forces behind the Case’s existence. Matt Kindt is a really good writer and I’m excited to see what he does with this very intriguing premise.

2. Future State Wonder Woman #2

This was one of my favorite Future State books last month! I really love this new Wonder Woman, Yara Flor. Her attitude and snarky quips are hilarious and she doesn’t take crap from anyone, not even the gods! Although this is the conclusion of this story, I’m hoping for a lot more to come from Yara.

3. Deep Beyond #1

Mirka Andolfo is one of the few creators that you need to read everything that they are involved with. This one is a little different than her previous works, it is a sci-fi (potentially horror) thriller. Two genres that are always on my radar. In the future, where society has all been wiped out by some sort of disease, scientists are tasked with saving the remaining few by studying an underwater abyss. But what they find might make them wish that they had all died off in the first place. Should be a great read!

1. Venom #32

Still our favorite father son read. Knull has been knocking our heroes around for a while and we are dying for Eddie Venom to get back into the fight. We only have a handful of issues of the Cates & Stegman run on this book; so I’m sure they’re going to make them count. We’re in this one to the end and can’t wait to see where this ride ends up.

2. Strange Academy #8

Feels strange to have this book on back to back pick lists but the release schedule for this one has been a bit odd thanks to Covid etc. We’re heading into the 2nd arc of this series and it continues to be so much fun. This week we get a guest spot appearance of Rocket and Groot as the kids head to space. The last few issues were pretty serious so hoping for a break with some levity this issue, You should be reading this one! It’s just begging for the Disney Plus treatment.

3. Specter Inspectors #1

Boom puts out Seven Secrets which is one of our consistent favorites. This book is not only by Boom but it’s on their Boom Box imprint which is more YA geared. (Like Scoot is for Scout for last weeks pick Loot.) We love stories centered on kids solving mysteries and the social media angle puts this right in Jakes wheel house. The idea of a bunch of young YouTube creators solving paranormal mysteries sounds fun to us. We have high hopes for this one. It’s exciting to see our favorite indie publishers putting out books geared to younger readers.
