One of our favorite things to do at the shop is sharing our weekly pull lists and must reads with one another. It’s one of the best ways we’ve been finding new things to read or even reasons to return to old favorites. We thought it would be fun to start sharing our weekly picks of books we’re most excited about. Our hope is that in sharing our excitement you might discover something new to add to your list. Check back weekly on Tuesday evenings for lists from John, Chandler and Jason & Jake. Each has a different background and perspective to share.

Spoiler alert: Also check back in the weeks to come for a chance to win some cool prizes including some of the books we’ll feature on our lists.

1. Department of Truth #2

Tynion has been on fire with Batman and his own property in Something is Killing the Children. The first issue explained why conspiracy theories can be dangerous. There were some great twists at the end of issue one so I’m looking forward to seeing where those threads are taken

2. Shang Chi #2

Marvel is preparing for its big push for the character hitting the silver screen. I’m not overly familiar with the character but the first issue did a great job of introducing the main character and his rivals. Hopefully they can keep up the momentum for the story

3. Electric Black Presents #1

I have been reading a lot of the old EC collections over the past year or so (highly recommended, especially for those who remember the Tales from the Crypt television series) and this series is done in that kind of vein. This is the perfect reading material to get in the proper mood for Halloween.

4. TMNT Last Ronin #1

This is a bittersweet selection as Diamond and IDW severely allocated the copies of this book. As a result, we only have a limited quantity and they are $25. (If you were already subscribed you’re good to go at cover price). There is a second print on the way in a few weeks however; so we can add you to that list if you are interested. This book envisions how TMNT would draw to a close at its creators hands. One brother is left standing. How did we end up here? We all want to find out.

1. Batman Three Jokers #3

The thrilling conclusion that we’ve all been waiting for! All I can say is if you think you know how it’s going to end you have no idea. Geoff Johns wraps up what is sure to be a story for the ages!

2. Department of Truth #2

This book is a really exciting new read. It’s every conspiracy theorist dreams come true. Every conspiracy theory that you’ve ever heard is true…and also false. What does that mean? Who decides these things? That’s where the department of truth comes in. This story is written by James Tynion IV who is very popular right now coming off the success of Joker war. Do yourself a favor and grab the first issue from our back issues and jump in for the wild ride!

3. Nailbiter Returns #6

This series takes place right after the first one left off. The town of Buckeroo, Oregon is the birthplace of 16 of the most notorious serial killers this world has seen. Coincidence or is there something (or someone) responsible? It’s definitely worth catching up to find out. We have all 6 volumes of the original Nailbiter series and we just got in volume 7 which contains the 1st 5 issues of Nailbiter Returns. This is an awesome read and very fitting for this time of the year.

4. Colonel Weird Cosmagog #1

Anyone who knows me knows that if Jeff Lemire writes something than I am in. But especially if that something takes place in the Black Hammer Universe. From the pages of Black Hammer comes Colonel Weird’s own mini-series. That’s right one of the coolest characters with an immense amount of untapped backstory is finally getting his time to shine! Look out for some awesome science fiction, great storytelling, interdimensional adventures, and incredibly compelling art. One things for sure, things are about to get Weird!

1. Batman Three Jokers #3

This series got Jake and I back on the batman bandwagon. It ties back to so many classic storylines while setting the stage for something new. Can’t wait to see how this wraps up. I have a feeling we’ll be re-reading this series from the beginning very soon.

2. Detective Comics #1029

Since Three Jokers got us into Batman in a big way we put two Batman books on our list this week. I feel like we picked a good time to jump in as this feels like the start of something new. This one features a new villain we’re excited about in Mirror Mirror.

3. Strange Academy #4

Jake and I can’t say enough good things about this series. We’ve been enjoying reading past Doctor Strange runs recently (The Donny Cates run is way underrated) and while he’s not been front and center in the series so far it has that same vibe. Harry Potter meets superheroes in a darker school for the magically gifted. Lots of new characters to get to know in a large ensemble cast of likeable characters. This book is so much fun and one of our favorite monthly father son reads. There are enough multiple printings of the earlier issues that it’s still really easy to jump in. Do yourself a favor and give this series a shot.
