One of our favorite things to do at the shop is sharing our weekly pull lists and must reads with one another. It’s one of the best ways we’ve been finding new things to read or even reasons to return to old favorites. We thought it
would be fun to start sharing our weekly picks of books we’re most excited about. Our hope is that in sharing our excitement you might discover something new to add to your list. Check back weekly on Tuesday evenings for lists from
John, Chandler and Jason & Jake. Each has a different background and perspective to share.
Spoiler alert: Also check back in the weeks to come for a chance to win some cool prizes including some of the books we’ll feature on our lists.
Veteran Comics Reader and Shop Owner. John offers the perspective of both a long time reader and shop owner.
Chandler has been reading and collecting for several years now. Long time customer who joined the Brainstorm team this year.
Jason & Jake’s Picks
Father and son (11yo) duo who started out as Brainstorm customers interested in D&D and MTG. Jason used to read comics off an on but only recently returned as he began reading and collecting as a father son activity with Jake.
1.Sea of Sorrows #1
Chandler likes to say that despite claiming I’m not a huge fan of horror, my picks paint a different picture. This pick isn’t going to change that perception. A salvage crew is patrolling the North Atlantic, looking for plunder. However, there are double crosses planned; no one can trust the person next to them. There are darker horrors lurking beneath the surface of the ocean, though.
2. Children of The Grave #1
Dystopian future? I’m in! Life on Earth has been reset. All of the needs of people are met by the providers. But one person is curious to find out more. What will they discover?
Frank at Home on The Farm #1
When Frank returns from WWI, his family is missing, setting him on a mission to find them. The solicit promises a mixture of Twin Peaks and The Shining. Needless to say, this had to be in my stack this week.
The Recount #1
After the assassination of the President, the conspirators turn their attention to those who put him in power–including the electorate at large. I’m a political and conspiracy junkie, so something tells me this will be right up my
1. Stillwater #3
I’ve had this book on the list before but it really is just that good. The story is so compelling that I am left counting the days until the next issue comes out. Zdarsky is doing something special here. Pick up this book!
2. Barbalien #1
Another mini series from the legendary Black Hammer universe!? Dreams do come true! Barbalien is one of my personal favorites from the og series and he is finally getting his own series! (Seriously go back and read Black Hammer!) He is an awesome character who hails from Mars. Look for great storytelling and grounded interpersonal drama that just happens to be on Mars.
3. Aquaman #65
This is a bittersweet pick as it will be finishing up a really enjoyable run from Kelly Sue Deconnick. She had big shoes to fill after Dan Abnett left the book but she did an awesome job. She added even more to the mythological lore aspect of Aquaman’s history and gave Mera some truly great character development that I hope will stick around for a long time. I will definitely miss seeing this book in my box every month!
Last Issue Check Backissues
1. Venom #30
Our favorite ongoing title and the one that got Jake into comics. Issue 30 sees the Venom Beyond arc come to a close. Can’t wait to see how this wraps up. Time to get Venom and Dyllan home in time to deal with Knull!
2. Symbiote Spider-Man #1
I remember being a kid and thinking how cool it was when Spider-Man found his black suit. Jake having become a big venom fan is now super interested in that period of spider-man. Getting to revisit it through this series and seeing
in tie into the upcoming Knull event sounds like a fun ride to us.
3. Avengers Marvels Snapshots #1
This is the type of title I don’t think would ever make the list for John or Chandler. I think this is where Jake and I reading and choosing as a father son duo offer a different point of view. As someone coming back and someone new
to comics revisiting earlier events and important moments is appealing to us. Add the perspective of the normal person as this series advertises makes it even more so to us. This cover also caught our eye as it’s by Alex Ross and
similar to one of our favorite timeless covers.
