Today, May 5th, is Free Comic Book Day, a global event where comic book stores across the world introduce new readers to the medium that we love and hopefully bring back some lapsed fans who forgot how great the stories and culture truly are.
Brainstorm Comics and Gaming, located at 54 E Patrick Street in downtown Frederick, Maryland, will be holding several different events and sales to allow you to experience all that we have to offer. We will be holding our first art show, giving out many different free books, have cosplayers circulating around downtown, holding a charity raffle, the artist from Pirate Eye will be signing books along with doing sketches and of course have some amazing sales.
Read on below about each of these.
Bold Lines Art Show, May 5th through May 31st
Brainstorm Comics and Gaming has partnered with many of the different local artists around the Frederick area to present more than 60 pieces that are comic book or fantasy inspired. One of John Frazier and Eva Brown’s desire is to help elevate the art scene for the creators of original pieces.
Almost a dozen local creative voices give a variety of interpretations of the characters and genres we know and love. Here are a few names of the artists who have provided pieces for Bold Lines:
Stephen Blickenstaff, John Detrich,
All of the artwork will be available for purchase as well as your viewing pleasure, so be sure to support these local creators by picking up something for your office or hobby room. The art show will begin at 10 am on May 5th and conclude on May 31st.
Here is a sample of some of the pieces that will be on display and available for purchase.
Later in the year, for ComicFest, Brainstorm Comics and Gaming will be holding another art show, but with a horror theme. Much like Free Comic Book Day, ComicFest offers comic stores a chance to connect with new readers and reconnect with old friends. Be sure to keep an eye out for more updates on that show as the ComicFest approaches.
Two of the recent big titles that were available with blank covers were Action Comics #1000 and Hunt for Wolverine #1. Brainstorm Comics and Gaming recruited a few local artists to provide Frederick/Maryland inspired original covers on these books to provide a truly one of a kind collectible.
All of the proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the charity of the artists’ choice. One of the Action Comics #1000 proceeds will be donated to the American Kidney Fund. Artwork was provided by Mark Russo who is available for commissions. Here we have Superman combating a Maryland crab with our state’s flag in the background.
Our second Action Comics #1000 offering is from Keith Lopez who presents Superman soaring over Frederick’s skyline. The proceeds will be donated to Hartley House.
Hunt for Wolverine #1 had artist Jeremiah Scott Clark provide a visual of Wolverine in the foreground of the clustered spires of Frederick. The proceeds from his piece will be donated to American Society for Deaf Children. He is available for commissions as well.
Raffle tickets will be $1 with each dollar getting you four entries to be divided as you like among the two covers. Each ticket will represent 25 cents toward that particular charity. Here are the two stunning pieces that will be raffled off.
With the two charities the artists chose, everyone is a winner.
Free Comic Book Day Books
This year, publishers around the industry (from the big two Marvel and DC to smaller independent ones) will be providing 50 different titles for people to choose from. We have a limit of 6 per person to ensure as many people as possible get to enjoy the fun and entertainment the medium has to offer. And don’t forget, Brian K Vaughn will be launching his new five-part miniseries Barrier on Free Comic Book Day. So if you’re fan of Saga, Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, or his many other great books, stop by so you can see what this new series is all about.
Here is a link to the books that will be available.
Brainstorm Comics and Gaming will be open from 10 am until 8 pm with books available all day while supplies last.
Carl Yonder, Artist for Pirate Eye
Carl Yonder will be on hand to sign his book along with doing sketches for those who do so. He will be in the store from 11 am to 3 pm. Be sure to support the local artist by checking out his work!
We will have people in costume as different characters roaming around downtown Frederick as different heroes and villains tomorrow, from 10:30 am until 5 pm. Get your picture taken with different personalities throughout the day.
As always, we like to reward those who make it into Brainstorm Comics and Gaming during Free Comic Book Day not just with many great and free books, but with amazing deals on some great reading.
