Every year the comic book industry reaches out to existing fans, lapsed fans and those who haven’t experienced the joy of finding a favorite character in the medium yet. That day is known as Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) and it is happening Saturday, August 14th this year at our Walkersville and Frederick locations. Due to space constraints and the rise in COVID cases, we are running this year’s event exclusively out of Walkersville, Maryland store located at 25 Maple Avenue. For those of you who have not been there yet, you in for a treat that comic fans deserve.
In addition to the plethora of amazing books available this year, Brainstorm Comics and Gaming will be raffling off 10 DC books. Those include the following:
- 4 copies of FCBD virgin Batman #1
- 4 copies of FCBD virgin Suicide Squad King Shark #1
- 1 copy of the FCBD Foil Batman #1
- 1 copy of the FCBD Foil Suicide Squad King Shark #1
Everyone who stops by will be entered into the raffle for the virgin copies listed above–no purchase necessary.
The drawing will be at 5 pm on Saturday. Limit of one entry per person/raffle.
FREE COMIC BOOK DAY SALE
What’s FCBD without rewarding the fans of the medium that allow us the opportunity to do what we love each and every day? Not as much fun, that’s for sure. So in addition to those dozens of free comics, we are giving back through our annual FCBD sale! This sale will be valid at both locations, so if you can’t make it to Walkersville store (only a 5 minute drive from the Wegman’s on 26), you can still reap some benefits. Here are the details of our sale:
- 30% off back issues (non-graded)
- 30% off new issues
- 30% off graphic novels
- 10% off dice
- 10% off board games (at the Frederick location)
- 5% off Games Workshop
Regardless of what you’re into, FCBD is a great day for you to shop at Brainstorm Comics and Gaming! A reminder: all of our board games are currently in our Frederick location due to some projects we are working on in Walkersville. Read on to see what BIG PROJECT is coming to fruition in October.
Local comic book artist Alex Clay will also have a table in our Walkersville location. A Maryland native who works as an independent artist, he fell in love with the medium at a young age when he discovered the Adventures of TinTin. Ever since that moment, Alex has created his own comics, dedicating himself to the craft.
In 2019 the creator finished his first self-published piece entitled Fly Quasar (a space adventure about a flight attendant dragged into a galactic smuggling ring). Following that up, three issues of Krynclaw have been put out by the writer-artist. That title is a fantasy quest featuring a gargoyle pledged to protect a mom and her son. If you would like to see some of his work, follow him on Facebook at Alex Clay – Comics and Art.
Support local talent by showing up on Saturday between 12:30 and 1:30 to meet Alex. We are sure he’d be open to answering any questions you have regarding publishing your own pieces as well.
THE BIG PROJECT AT WALKERSVILLE
Over the course of the last few months, we’ve been putting together the necessary equipment for our next big project–cleaning and pressing comics for our customers beginning in October. Why October? Our goal is to have the two apprentices working with our Head Presser to have 250 hours of experience with our own books before they ever touch one of yours.
Heading up the project is Peter who has almost 5 years and 5,000 comics of cleaning and pressing experience. His two apprentices are Brandon and Amanda–you may have seen a video or two that we’ve posted on Instagram or Facebook.
If you’d like to get a sneak peek at our process, Peter and Brandon will be working on books in our Walkersville location on Saturday. We currently are not taking books for submissions due to the statement above–we want our pressers in training to have the process down correctly before touching anyone else’s books. We love comics and never want to harm someone else’s.

We want to thank each and every one of you for supporting us over the course of the last year and a half. It was a trying time that was as difficult for all of you as it was for us. We sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding as we implemented policies in order to hopefully slow the growth of COVID while providing you your means of entertainment.
It has been a tough year, but it has also been one that has strengthened our commitment to the comic and gaming communities of Frederick and Walkersville. We hope you join us in our celebration of that fact this Saturday, August 14th for Free Comic Book Day at 25 Maple Avenue in Walkersville, Maryland for free books or in our 117 N Market St location in Frederick, Maryland for a great sale.
