It’s the happiest day of the week–WEDNESDAY!–when new comics line the shelves with the promise of escapism from the real world. And this week there are many great options for your reading pleasure.
This is John’s Top of the Stack, where he counts down to the book who rests atop his reading pile for the week. Be sure to let us know what is on top of your stack as well.

And now, let’s begin the countdown to see what’s is King of the Mountain on this week’s edition of John’s Top of the Stack…..
10) Star Wars: Tag and Bink Were Here
You’re unfamiliar with Tag and Bink? Think Rosencrantz and Guidenstern Are Dead mixed with your favorite Star Wars action. How did two stormtroopers affect the happenings of the Star Wars mythos? Find out here.
9) Spider-Man #240
This had to make the list as Bendis pens his final Miles Morales story….at least for a while. Where will he leave the character he created? I’m looking forward to finding out.
8) Alien Toilet Monsters #1
This one makes the list because it looks like a fun title. Are we ready for what awaits us in the universe? For some reason it gives me an Attack of the Killer Tomatoes vibe, which I loved, so I’m checking it out. Here’s their official website for you to check out….
7) Batman #46
First off–Booster Gold! He’s traveling through time to stop himself from creating mischief in the timestream. As a result, we are seeing an alternative take on the DCU. I’m always a fan of different takes of what would happen with divergent events.
6) Death and Glory #1
This one is on my list because it’s written by Rick Remender. Glory is on a mission to commit four heists while being chased by a bevy of bad guys. Why is her mission so important? She needs to pay for surgery for her father. The art looks top notch and we already know what Remender can do.
5) Hunt for Wolverine: Weapon Lost #1
I’m in on this one for two reasons–my love of Daredevil and to unravel the mystery of Logan’s return. Our group of heroes is investigating a series of appearance by Wolverine to verify their authenticity.
4) Come Into Me #2
What would it be like to share your body with another person? In this book, an invention has allowed people to do just that. The first issue had a great atmosphere to it. If you’re looking for some creepy sci-fi horror along the lines of Black Mirror, check this one out.
3) Harley Quinn: Harley Loves Joker #1
Why is this one on the list? Two words–Paul Dini! The man who co-created the character returns for a two issue miniseries. Batman: The Animated Series still holds a special place in my heart, so this is a must read.
2) Deathstroke #31
The story between Batman and Deathstroke continues! Between the question of who Damien’s father is to the deeper implications of the question, this one is sure to become a classic story. More mysteries are added to the book.
And that brings us to the book on John’s Top of the Stack, which is…..
1) Avengers #1
Jason Aaron is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers, not just for Marvel but for all of comics. His run on Doctor Strange and Mighty Thor were amazing. Add to that mixture Ed McGuinness’s art and we have a must read comic that tops the stack this week. A new Avengers team is created in order to combat the Celestials. Plus, several of the story threads that were laid in Marvel Legacy #1 are going to be explored.
Covers of the Week
It’s an all DC cover week this time and honestly, I’m not going to rank these as all three are fantastic.
Batman #46 cover B by Kaare Andrews
Green Lanterns #46 cover B by Brandon Peterson
Deathstroke #31 cover B by Jerome Opena and Dean White
FREE COMIC BOOK DAY NEWS AND DEALS
So what is Brainstorm Comics and Gaming going to be doing for Free Comic Book Day? A lot! Here’s the run-down:
Free comics! Well, that goes without saying, but here’s a rundown of the great titles that will be available….
In order to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy what’s available, we do have a limit of 6 per person.
Brainstorm is putting on an art show from May 5th through May 31st entitled Bold Lines. The pieces will be for sale and were created by local artists as inspired by the comic medium. If you’re looking for an original piece to liven up the office, you’ll definitely want to check out these pieces.
We have Carl Yonder, artist for Pirate Eye, in the store for signings and sketches.
A couple of local artists also contributed some original art that they did on some blank covers. These will be raffled off with all of the proceeds going to each artists’ chosen charity. I’ve seen one one of the pieces and I think fans of Wolverine will be very interested in adding that one to their collection. Plus, as I said, it helps charities. Raffle tickets will be $1 each.
Brainstorm Comics and Gaming will also have many different cosplayers roaming around downtown. Get your picture taken with some of your favorite heroes and villains.
Don’t worry, we have you covered for sales as well!
30% off back issues (non-graded)
30% off graphic novels
15% off board games and RPGs
10% off toys/statues/Reaper minis
10% off graded books
Thank you for the opportunity to allow us to bring you entertainment week in and week out. Hopefully we see you on Free Comic Book Day.
