The staff of Brainstorm Comics and Gaming is dedicated to helping you, the comic collector and comic reader, find the comic book picks that are in line with your tastes. While many places simply want to make the sale, placing a book in your hand regardless of what you’re looking for, we pride ourselves on wanting you to find the book that will make you salivate with desire for that next issue. In order to assist with that goal, the staff is now putting together a list of the books we are looking forward to each week. Find the staff member that most resembles your tastes. Be warned, though–reading Top of the Stack may cause you to find more great reads.

We want to hear from you as well. Let us know what’s on top of your stack. Afterwards be sure to check out Stormwatch on YouTube where we highlight the top 3 DC, Independent and Marvel books we think you should keep an eye out for this week!

Let’s get to the staff’s picks though. Buckle up because these comic book picks are going to take you for a wild ride!

BALMORY’S PICK

SWAMP THING #10

THE SOLICIT

Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, thAs the battle between Levi and Jacob comes to a head, the future of the Green—and so of all living things—is embroiled in existential conflict. And there are those who have learned to look for windows of opportunity in conflict. The true nature of Prescot’s machinations will become apparent even as their actions will put into question the very nature of the world we live in.

WHY TOP OF THE STACK?

The first full arc of Ram V’s Swamp Thing has come to an end and I cannot praise this series enough. The future of the green is in jeopardy as Levi and Jacob continue their battle over all living things. If you’re a fan of social and political commentary or even Alan Moore’s original saga of the Swamp Thing run, pick this series up!

CHANDLER’S PICK

DEVIL’S REIGN #1

THE SOLICIT

The story that’s been building for years is here! Wilson Fisk went from Kingpin to mayor of the biggest city in America and is going to bring his full criminal and political power to bear on the super heroes who call NYC home. The man who once destroyed Daredevil has set his sights on The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and more. And since it’s Fisk, once he takes them all down, you know he’s going to sign it. CROSSBONES! TASKMASTER! TYPHOID MARY! SHOCKER! WHIPLASH! RHINO! KRAVEN! Fisk has an ARMY of super villains at his command—and this is just his opening salvo. For years, Fisk has waited for his time to strike, and YOU WON’T BELIEVE the aces he’s got up his sleeves!

WHY TOP OF THE STACK?

This is Marvel’s next big event and it’s definitely something to be excited about. The first reason is that the same Daredevil team that has produced an amazing run is taking charge of this event. Chip Zdarsky is on fire right now and Mark Checchetto is a phenomenal artist so this this will be an amazing series. Another reason is after a long hiatus, Wilson Fisk is returning as a true super villain and is launching a super villain war on the heroes of the Marvel Universe. This looks like a really fun event from people who know how to make really great superhero comics.

JOHN’S PICK

ANIMAL CASTLE #1

THE SOLICIT

Double double toil and rumble…Brace yourself for a No-Holds-Bard reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth from the critically-acclaimed creators of Sink. New Orleans, 1984. Chuck Frenzy is the main event star of the local Louisiana pro wrestling territory, but yearns for something greater. A fateful encounter with a trio of terrifying beings in the Bayou gives Chuck a glimpse of championship glory beyond his wildest dreams…if he is willing to do something terrible to achieve it. Join writer John Lees (Hotell) and artist Alex Cormack (Sea of Sorrows) for a thrilling new vision of the classic tale of ambition and madness, starting with this special, oversized first chapter.

WHY TOP OF THE STACK?

I love wrestling.

I love Shakespeare.

I love comics

Combining the three is a can’t-miss opportunity to see Macbeth in a whole new light. Something about this–besides being a stew of all my favorite things–just speaks to me. It’s absurd enough to work. I’m looking forward to this more than I probably should be.

JAKE/JASON’S PICK

Jake and I are going to have to go with this one as it’s a light week for us. Chips Daredevil is the first book Jake and I added to our pull list and it has been a consistent favorite read for us ever since. With an awesome arc wrapping up, we’re excited to see what Chip takes these characters in the future. With rumors flying around regarding Daredevil and Fisk coming back into the MCU proper, this is a book we’re very excited about as it seems big things are in store for these characters.

MYSTERY MAN’S PICK

BATMAN #118

THE SOLICIT

New creative team! Start of a new story arc as Batman leaves Gotham! “Abyss” part one! As Gotham celebrates surviving Fear State, Batman retreats alone into the darkness. But when he learns of a mystery involving Batman Inc., it forces the Caped Crusader to leave Gotham for a brand-new adventure! Thrills, chills, and international intrigue await! The Dark Knight begins a new story with superstar artist Jorge Molina and new writer Joshua Williamson!

WHY TOP OF THE STACK?

If anyone can follow in the footsteps of James Tynion IV, it’s Joshua Williamson. Having just delivered the goods on Infinite Frontier, Williamson has the reins of the Bat-franchise. How does it start off? Batman is abandoning his city–Gotham–for a new adventure. Great McFarlane homage variant cover. The interiors are amazing. You aren’t going to want to miss this new era of the Batman universe. All Batman, all the time.
